Congratulations
Maui !!
Maui tracksters showed true island pride despite
running on a somewhat slow track with hot daytime and cold, windy
nighttime conditions.
Akoni Clubb from King Kekaulike High School captured
Maui's first gold with a win in the 110m hurdles. Maui High's
Phillip Fernandez followed soon after with the gold in the long jump and
St. Anthony's 4 x100m team capped off their season with a gold and a new
record time.
In the girls division, Chandi Bickford of King
Kekaulike ended her high school track career with a second in the 400m
race, second in long jump, fourth in triple jump, and assisted her team
with a 6th in the 4x100m and a 5th in the 4x400m race. Dee Battles
of Maui High finished strong with a tie for 5th place in the 100m and
Kueni Sunia of Baldwin finished with 4th in the shot put event.
Way to go Maui !! You did your schools proud !!
M.I.L.
Championships in the books.
Even without the top tracksters like Maui High's
Daniel & Nick Jachowski, Lahainaluna's Caitlin McDonald, St. Anthony's
star high jumper Tiara Dole the competition was still fierce. Maui High
boys and Baldwin High girls captured the title of league champions by
outdistancing their nearest opponents by over 20 points.
By dominating in the sprints, placing 3 individuals
in the top 5 in pole vault and 110 hurdles along with key finishes in
other events, Maui High boys squad captured the title with ease.
Despite Kainoa Guerin's (Baldwin) new 3000m record of 9:28.92 or their
valiant effort with a sweep in the 1500m, it was not enough. The
other schools placed several of their top athletes in key places to
break up the points.
On the girls side, it was a totally different story.
The Baldwin girls squad ran away from the competition with a clear win
of well over 40 points. The depth of talent in their team in all
events was the key to their success.
Maui can look forward to some great representation in
the upcoming state competition. So, if you recognize some of the
names, give them your best wishes and support as they prepare for their
toughest competition of the year. Results from last nights meet is
posted here.
